Upwaltham Barns was a blur of people at the start of Lisa & Stephen’s wedding day, all rushing to hug and kiss each other. Some weddings are like this, particularly ones where people have come from abroad to see the couple get married. Lisa is from New Zealand, so people really were coming from half way around the world.
I spent the start of the day with Lisa & her bridesmaids getting ready. I had two things going for me, the room Lisa was getting ready in at Upwaltham Barns has loads of space & the light was beautifully soft. I had time to go and get some shots of Stephen & the others since everyone was around the courtyard. This is one of the great advantages of a wedding being in one place, I can move between everyone seamlessly getting all the shots I need, without having problems getting between locations.
Lisa & Stephen’s ceremony was very moving and introduced one of the themes of the day, singing! Throughout the day there were people singing beautifully, at the ceremony, before the meal & after.
After the ceremony, Lisa & Stephen walked out into a shower of confetti. It’s one of the few times during the day when I feel, as an Upwaltham Barns wedding photographer, it is better if I have a hand in what’s going on. I normally like to let everyone enjoy themselves & capture the real fun and joy on everyone’s faces while it all happens, but with confetti it really does help to arrange it & then let everyone enjoy the chaos that follows!
I took Lisa & Stephen off to get some lovely images of just the two of them. Lisa was happy to don wellies & trudge up the hill where I let them have a few minutes together while I buzzed round them taking photos. At times it really felt like they didn’t even know I was there!
The speeches were excellent & of course the singing was wonderful, making for a great atmosphere. Lisa & Stephen’s first dance was choreographed & was beautifully elegant. Many couples who do a choreographed first dance spend the dance looking petrified as they try to remember their routine. But Lisa & Stephen looked every bit as elegant as their dance, they really looked like they were enjoying it.
A last surprise was the dj’ing by guests…Lisa & Stephen & their mum’s & dad’s took it in turns to get behind the decks & play the music, it certainly encouraged people on to the dance floor & they seemed to be having a lot of fun doing it!
